Joe tells Gary to keep the money he was going to use to buy Joe's truck and use it to get insurance. When he questions what insurance is, Joe promises to help him with it.

As Joe drives home, a patrol cop stops him and tries to make him take a breathalyzer, but Joe refuses and drives away. After an altercation, Joe beats up the officer.

A senior officer, a friend of Joe's and a fellow ex-con, visits Joe and says the patrol cop had it coming, but warns him to keep his nose clean.

Gary arrives at Joe's house, his face bruised, and asks to borrow his truck. Gary reveals that Wade beat him up, stole his truck and left with Dorothy, intent on pimping her out to Willie and his goon.

They go after Wade. Joe arrives and subdues Willie, and Gary leaves with Dorothy for help. Willie begs an unmoved Joe for his life, but as Joe prepares to kill him, one of Willie's thugs shoots him in the side and accidentally shoots Willie as well.

Joe kills the thug then finishes Willie off before limping towards Wade, who is standing on a nearby bridge.

He tries to shoot him, but misses. He attempts to shoot Wade again, but finds he is out of bullets. Wade asks Joe if he is his friend, and when Joe doesn't answer, leaps to his death.

Joe then collapses and looks at the gaping wound in his side. Gary arrives with the sheriff and embraces Joe as he dies. He then looks down and sees his father's body.

He arrives at job interview to replant the woods Joe and his crew had originally tore down. Joe received critical acclaim from critics.

In IMDb, the movie's rating was 6. The film circulated into the mainstream news when actor Gary Poulter was found dead in a shallow body of water on February 19, , before the film was ever released.

His only other acting credit was as a background extra in the TV series Thirtysomething. Producers worried that casting Poulter in the film would be a risk because of his alcoholism, but Green stayed committed to having him in the film.

While Tye Sheridan is not Jennifer Lawrence, his more quiet demeanor makes him more likable in the eyes of the viewer. Sheridan is a kid who came out of nowhere to star in the independent film, Mud, and since then has become known for making these super dark, intense films, where he plays a quiet, reserved character that one can't help but root for.

Nicholas Cage is equally as good in a role that is more dramatic than most of things he's done lately. That being said, Cage still has it and together with Sheridan make for one of the most interesting and unique films I've seen all year.

The story and even the trailer seem to be a little dull, most people will look at this film and see it as too slow and dramatic, and at first, I thought so too, but as the film progresses it just gets better and better, ascending to the level of a must see movie.

Aug 03, A grimy, dirty story of an ex-con named Joe Nicolas Cage , who is running a successful tree poisoning business, until he slowly starts to become a father figure to an abused young boy Tye Sheridan who desperately wants to work for him and get away from his dangerous father the late Gary Poulter.

This film resembles "Mud" in many ways, especially by the presence of Sheridan who was in that film as well.

However, what made "Mud" special was how the plot unfolded in a natural way and there seemed to be some direction behind the plot narrative.

Here, the direction seems scattershot, like it does not know where it is going or what the point of the story is outside of "abuse is bad".

The real treat here is the absolutely outstanding acting, especially from Cage who shows once again why he is one of the best actors on the planet when he is not doing stupid, silly blockbusters.

Sheridan is special as well, and Poulter an actual homeless man discovered and casted by the director is Shakespearean level terrifying in his portrayal of a man with truly no soul.

The movie has good intentions, and David Gordon Green is usually a solid director, but the way the plot unravels seems a bit contrived at times.

Joe Where our children turn when their parents let them down is one of the most troubling areas for fact and fiction both.

Nicolas Cage's checkered career doesn't diminish his strong, heartfelt performance here as Joe, leading a group of workers in the deep woods of some Deep South state doing illegal tree killing.

But that's just backdrop, because a teenager, Gary, comes along looking for work, seemingly just from some patch of these rural woods or one of the little backwards towns nearby.

Joe has issues with violence and alcohol, but he's a truly good person deep down below all the conflicts and bad judgments, and he learns that Gary has an abusive father and troubled family.

And he gradually gets involved. As this intersection grows, we learn more about Joe's world in the town, about some other guys who have it out for him, and about his sense of honor.

It's that kind of world where government of all kinds, including the police, is considered unnecessary to the point of being bad, and instead people have a kind of independence that is sometimes admirable and sometimes pure belligerence.

That's the part of the movie I liked much more than I expected, and was what I took away above all—the portrayal of a kind of life and a kind of people, told with an odd kind of honesty that works.

It doesn't just reside there, however. The plot becomes highly dramatic, even sensational, as some of the shifty characters get motivated to get really violent.

There is even a point when it gets so hairy for Joe he does something unthinkable until now—he calls the cops.

You'll see, it's an odd turning point. So this vengeance and violence make the plot have teeth, I suppose, and it's fine, but I actually sense another movie that didn't get made here that was toned down two steps and had all these elements and yet kept the focus on the real grit.

And there's Gary, who is a pretty decent kid somehow his father is about as bad as fathers can get, but his mom had some influence, I guess.

We can finally see how a kid can escape a family horror and move on, while growing up and becoming a decent person, maybe another Joe, which oddly enough the world needs.

It's worth watching just for all these things. Give it twenty minutes to develop, and it'll click. Looking for something to watch?
