View All Critic Reviews Nov 17, Devil's Due is a underrated 'found footage' horror film. While the market is saturated with these sort of films, DD sets itself apart with a chilling backstory, and very solid acting, particularly the children kid in grocery store, blond little girl.
If you want a horror film that will get you jolting and keep you in suspense, overall, this is a good film. Criticisms for the film: 1 Several Cheap Thrills 2 A little bit of common sense and fight missing from characters.
To be fair though, I've watched many of these 'docu-horror' films, and this was certainly one of the better films.
So, let go, and enjoy! Drew A Super Reviewer. Sep 30, Where are those good horror Movies these days. I just dont believe that I wasted my time after this.
NaWie M Super Reviewer. Jun 01, That's the best thing about this movie, that it helped me come up with a very stupid joke.
I don't wanna say that this is scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as found footage horror films go, I'm sure there's some really low-budget, cheaply produced crap that's far worse than this.
But, as far as "mainstream" found footage films go, this is only a slight step above The Devil Inside. Perhaps that's a bit harsh because, at first, glance this film doesn't seem so bad.
There is some stupidity like the antichrist protecting the unborn baby when it sense it's in danger. If that's the case then why not just get rid of the Zach, Sam's husband, and avoid him putting up a resistance to the coming of one of the antichrist's children.
Don't let him ever find out about the cult that is facilitating this process. Turns out the antichrist isn't as smart as he has led people to believe.
That's the stupidest thing that comes to mind. The problem is that the film is absolutely content in mimicking found footage films that came before it, that were better.
The one that comes to mind the most is the most obvious one. That being Paranormal Activity, the first one at least. There's something about how the film is structured and edited that just screams PA.
This film, in its climax, is a little more violent and bloody than PA ever will be, but it's clear this film was patterned after that series and its success.
I think it's fine if you take inspiration from a very successful series, or even borrow elements from it. How many vampire films did we get right after Twilight came out?
It's gonna happen when something is popular, it's inevitable. In the case of Twilight, though, many of the vampire related films that came after it were considerably better.
Found footage horror films are far more misses than they are hits, so it's increasingly difficult to find one that is as good, or better, than the first PA film.
The problem comes when the PA series itself is as creatively stagnant as it is that you want to see others try something different instead of repeating the same stuff you've seen a thousand times before.
And that is the main flaw of this. It's content in repeating what others have done instead of blazing its own path.
Or even if you're gonna shamelessly ripoff another series, then at least put a little more effort into your scares, something this film is completely devoid of.
There's some jump scares here and there, but that's just laziness to me. Here's the thing that made the first PA so great, they knew how to build tension.
You were dreading what was going to happen because you knew it was gonna be worse than what you had already seen. That's something SO few horror movies get, that it's revealing another side of Paranormal Activity's intelligence, the first one of course, and not the terrible sequels.
This film doesn't get the tension and the suspense right at all. For the most part this really is just a boring movie to watch, there's no suspense.
And that is what is needed most in this type of film where you're saving everything for the last 15 minutes. I will say that the climax of the film was decent and suitably bloody, but it doesn't really do much other than remind you of how much better this could've been if more effort was put into it.
Perhaps the filmmakers did put in an effort, I don't mean to disregard their work And these guys did a pretty good segment in the first VHS.
Nothing extraordinary, but enough to make you think they'd do something better than this for their first full-length feature film.
Just skip this movie altogether and rent REC. Now that's a fabulous found footage horror film. It doesn't get any better than that.
Jesse O Super Reviewer. Apr 16, Found Footage horror films nowadays feels overdone, derivative and pointless. Yet, studios still seem to make them.
After the last two Paranormal Activity films, you could clearly see that the genre had overstayed its welcome.
With Devil's Due you have a generic film that simply isn't scary and it fails to really grab your attention in terms of horror elements.
The found footage genre is overdone, and with a film like this one, it's clear that there is nothing left to offer the genre. The cast are good, but it'[s a shame that the film's material doesn't gel together, and in turn becomes forgettable.
Devil's Due is never scary; in fact it's silly in the way it tries to do so. You know exactly how this film will turn out. The scares are nonexistent, and the film's story just suffers from a lack of genuine thrills and good writing.
If you want a great horror film, you won't find it here. This is a predictable affair, one that we've seen in far better found footage horror films.
Devil's Due has the misfortune of coming too late in the game, and the result is a train wreck of a film, and it's unfortunate that the story is bad because the cast are quite good here.
After the Enterprise arrives, they rescue Dr. Clarke who brings them up to date: A thousand years ago, according to Ventaxian history, the population entered a Faustian deal with Ardra, their mythology's devil.
In exchange for ending wars and restoring the ecological balance, and improving their heavily polluted planet, the population would become the personal slaves of Ardra a thousand years later.
As the millennium is about to come to a close, the planet has recently begun experiencing mild earthquakes, as well as seeing images of Ardra in the skies.
These were said to be signs of her arrival. She demonstrates her identity by starting an earthquake at will, and transforming into the Klingon devil Fek'lhr of Gre'Thor.
Ardra states that she has come to claim the planet. Picard is instantly suspicious and orders Data to examine the contract that supposedly was signed by Ardra and the leaders of the planet a thousand years earlier.
Picard returns to the Enterprise afterwards, and Ardra appears on the bridge, sitting in the Captain's chair. Security Chief Worf Michael Dorn fails to remove her.
Data returns just then and confirms the language of the contract as well as Ardra's claim to the planet and anything in its orbit, including the Enterprise.
Later, in a meeting with the senior staff, Picard expresses his belief that she is a confidence trickster and points out that all of her alleged powers can be recreated with theatrically delivered technology.
After the meeting, Picard goes to bed for the evening. As Picard sleeps, Ardra appears and tries to seduce him, but he rejects her.
She transports him to the planet dressed in his pajamas. Data comes to collect Picard by shuttle after Worf is unable to transport him back the normal way.
When Picard and Data attempt to return to the Enterprise , the ship disappears. Not knowing what to do, they return to the planet.
Citing old legal precedent, Picard calls for a Ventaxian arbitration hearing, to which Ardra agrees, provided Data acts as the arbitrator, as he will act with impartiality.
Picard explains to the leader of the planet that the people had actually improved their planet by themselves, through their own gradual hard work, ingenuity, and dedication.
However, continued demonstrations of powers further the claim that Ardra is indeed whom she says she is. During the course of the hearing, Chief Engineer La Forge LeVar Burton and Clarke discover that Ardra has a cloaked ship nearby, that she is indeed using technology to simulate magic, and that she is a known criminal.
Picard sends an away team, led by Commander Riker Jonathan Frakes , to take control of Ardra's ship, giving Picard control of her powers.
He demonstrates the technology-based fraud and she is taken into custody by local authorities. This episode illustrates Arthur C. Clarke's Third Law : "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
The episode was originally developed from a premise for the cancelled Star Trek: Phase II , [3] although it underwent significant changes. In the original version, the Enterprise visits Naterra and meets the planet's leader, Zxolar, who is concerned that Captain Kirk is an alien called Komether, who is due to return within twenty days to destroy their world.
The landing party searches for McCoy, to no avail, and Zxolar is beamed to the Enterprise. Doctor Chapel attempts to help him, but the energy field appears around her and she passes out.
Xon and Kirk discuss the energy and realize it wants Zxolar to die, as it has attacked anyone who helps him. They note one of the philosophers is Zxolar and Komether is the energy being that attacked the two doctors.
As in the later version used on Star Trek: The Next Generation , the agreement was that the being would correct the pollution of the planet in return for ownership of the planet a thousand years later.
Xon and Kirk decide to move Zxolar to a life support table and ask for other volunteers, as it is apparent that Komether will attack them as they attempt to save Zxolar.
Scotty , Sulu and Chekov all volunteer as well, [7] and the alien disables each of them as they move Zxolar. It is only because of Xon's strength as he is being attacked that they manage to attach Zxolar to a life support machine and his life signs immediately improve.
Zxolar tells Kirk about the contract, who retrieves it from the planet's surface and challenges it. Komether appears and agrees to a trial with the Enterprise ' s computer acting as an impartial judge.
Kirk realizes that Komether was created by the six philosophers, and as the last remaining, Zxolar is in control of it. Zxolar manages to defeat the creature using his will and releases the stunned crewmen.

A young couple, Zach and Samantha McCall, are about to get married when Zach decides he wants to document their life together since Sam was raised in foster homes and doesn't know much about her history or roots.
After their wedding, they go to the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon. During Carnival, the couple meet a fortune teller DeMaris Gordon , who declares Sam was "born from death" and repeats to Sam that "they have been waiting" for her.
Creeped out, the couple quickly leave. On their way out, a strange man watches them. They get lost on the way home and a cab driver Roger Payano offers to take them to a local club.
There are numerous strange symbols marking the area on their way there. At the club, the same man from the fortune teller's watches them and speaks with the cab driver.
Unaware they are being trapped, the couple is drugged and taken to an underground chamber beneath the nightclub where a ritual is performed and an unseen force fills the room.
A couple of weeks after the honeymoon, Sam discovers she is pregnant despite claiming to have taken birth control pills "religiously" ever since the wedding.
Though shocked, Zach and Samantha are overjoyed and tell their family and friends the news. The couple later attend their first ultrasound scan where the doctor says that the baby looks healthy and Sam is due by the end of March.
At that moment, the ultrasound screen goes static but recovers after a moment. Throughout the course of her pregnancy, Sam begins to experience nosebleeds, stomach bruising, cravings for raw meat despite being a vegetarian , superhuman strength, telekinetic abilities and unexplained feelings of rage whenever she or the baby appear to be threatened.
Also, Zach and Sam keep seeing odd-looking people watching them from afar. Sam becomes convinced something is seriously wrong with the baby and that they are being watched.
After a second visit to the doctor, a new doctor Robert Aberdeen appears and performs an amnio after Sam appears nauseous. He has no answer as to the whereabouts of their original doctor and the couple is suspicious.
Before the couple return home, masked men set up hidden cameras inside their home to monitor her progress and make sure she does not hurt the baby.
When Sam is eight months pregnant, the couple attend a holy communion at their church. Their usually friendly niece Madison Wolfe is oddly scared of Sam now, and the priest Sam Anderson who officiated Zach and Sam's wedding looks at Sam during the service and violently coughs up blood.
Later at home, when Zach is reviewing the communion footage he filmed, he sees the mysterious cab driver from their honeymoon sitting in a pew.
He visits the priest in the hospital, who explains the symbol is related to summoning the Antichrist.
He warns Zach that the symbol is the gateway for the Antichrist, and that the followers of the cult will dress the house in ash to prepare for the arrival.
After he finds ash all over his house and the cops will not do anything , Zach chases the people watching their house and finds out where they are living.
He asks his sister Suzie to stay with Sam while he breaks into the supposedly abandoned house at the end of his street where the cult is staying, and there he finds the CCTV footage of his house and the missing ultrasound.
He is almost caught by the cult when he goes to leave. Performing the ritual with the other cult members is the McCall's mysterious second doctor, as well as the man who has been watching their house and the cult leader who they initially saw at the fortune teller's place and later at the club.
Zach barely manages to escape. Meanwhile, Suzie goes to check Sam, only to find that she is drawing the cult symbol before being attacked by an unseen force.
Upon returning home, Zach finds the house surrounded by the masked men who have been watching them all along.
Inside, he finds Suzie dead and hears Sam scream as the house is being destroyed by some unseen force. He finds Sam in the baby's nursery standing in a trance-like state with a knife to her stomach the knife was a mysterious gift at her baby shower.
She is standing atop the cult symbol that she has carved into the floor. Zach screams for her to stop, but she presses the knife to her stomach anyway and there is a violent blast of light.
When Zach recovers, he finds Sam lying in her own blood with her stomach cut. Sam cries and wonders if the baby is all right before dying in his arms.
Zach breaks down in grief before the cab driver and the second doctor arrive. Zach begs the intruders to leave them alone, but the doctor takes the baby regardless.
The baby glows a deep red as he takes it from Sam's body. The cult takes his camera and tapes, removing all evidence. Zach is arrested and interrogated by the police about the death of his wife and sister, and disappearance of his child, crimes for which he looks guilty.
Before the credits, the screen shows another young couple, on their honeymoon in Paris , where the same cab driver offers them a lift, hinting that the events are about to repeat all over again.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett had been approached by several other companies for "haunted house projects" but chose to work on Devil's Due over the other projects because they felt that the script was a character based "creepy mood piece" that focused on the deteriorating relationship between its two main characters.
The script had been pitched to them as "a found-footage take on Rosemary's Baby ," but the directors wanted to find ways to make their movie different from the film that they both praise and consider a personal favorite.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett chose to shoot the film primarily with a Sony PMW-EX3, which they chose so that the film's actors could carry it throughout the film.
Fox released its first trailer for the film on October 16, , and a second trailer on December 5, On January 14, prior to the release of the film, Fox promoted the movie by releasing a video of footage of an animatronic baby carriage and demon baby scaring passers-by in New York City.
Critical reception of Devil's Due was negative. The film's consensus reads: "Derivative and mostly uninspired, Devil's Due adds little to either the found-footage or horror genres that it's content to mimic.
Much of the film's criticism centered upon the film's similarity to other films such as Rosemary's Baby and Paranormal Activity , [16] [17] an element that Fearnet reviewer Scott Weinberg remarked was likely more due to decisions by the film's production company than anything else.
However, since initial release the film has found a cult following and director Eli Roth has been vocal in his support of the film and in a series of posts on his official Twitter account, wrote "Don't pre-judge Devil's Due because Rosemary's Baby is a 'holy grail' movie.
