The image and sound quality is first rate -- really doesn't get much better than this. There are a number of extras and they're all good. I wish they would have included Heyerdahl's original documentary film, which won an Oscar for Best Documentary in This is an excellent and very highly recommended!

Visually, it makes little sense for this film. Don't judge a film by its cover. Anchor Bay tripped up here. I'm casually familiar with the Kon Tiki story, and have not read the book.

I had seen something on TV about his movie while traveling and it piqued my interest. I finally purchased and watched the blu-ray version this week.

Because I haven't read the book, I can't say if the movie followed the true story or not. I can say that I enjoyed the pace of the movie and appreciated how it sounded on my home theater with a recently upgraded subwoofer.

The english version is short, about an hour and a half, but is a good adventure story. My 10 year-old daughter watched the entire movie with me though we fast-forwarded through a bloody scene at the 1 hour mark.

Because we got a late start and her bedtime came to soon after we began, we watched in two sittings -- the first 30 minutes when financing and crew were being secured followed by the rest.

I was surprised that she came back since the first half hour was mainly dialogue; but, I had told her the basic plot so I think that helped keep her interest.

After it was over she said that she really liked it. The fact that he sat still says a lot and I was quite surprised.

Over all, a great adventure story and good family movie. I recommend skipping a few minutes at the 1-hour mark english version if younger children are watching.

Sadly this wonderful film was not widely distributed and it definitely needs the Big Screen experience to be fully appreciated so if you have a whopping great TV in your home or a good local film club you will find this beautifully filmed movie of the fascinating tale of the Kon Tiki expedition a visual feast.

I recommend reading this first and then seeing the film where you will have the added pleasure of relating Hesselberwg's drawings to scenes in the film.

Eloquently put into context the story of Heyadahl and the Kon-tiki which made my subsequent visit to Oslo and the Kon-tiki museum so much more enjoyable.

As far as I could work out the film is very near to the truth which is always welcome and was well made which breathed life into the story.

This film was Oscar nominated so expectations were high, I was genuinely impressed, stunning photography and acting, the film was shot simultaneously in Norwegian and English, this disc from Germany has the English version plus dubbed German.

I would imagine this film would be stunning on the big screen but as yet no release in Britain is forecast, so Bluray or dvd is your sole means of viewing this superb film about a voyage not so well known today.

It is still extant today on DVD and has an authentic impact - how could it not - that this film lacks slightly. But this version captures the spirit of Mr.

Heyerdahl and his crew very well while maintaining respect for the original documentary, and is aesthetically pleasing - by standards - also.

I would highly recommend watching the "Bonus" section of this DVD which, although it contains comments by some unlikely celebrities - Diane Von Furstenberg and Matt Lauer - it sets the expedition in the context of our current world-view.

What none of the films mentioned above can show is the inspirational impact the expedition had on the world after the horrors of two world wars.

It gave us hope that we had not destroyed the world after all and that there were new frontiers to be found in it.

So we kept on exploring it! I found the book difficult to put Amazingly, I had never heard of the Kontiki until I bought a "Kontiki" watch and decided to read more about the Heyerdahl expedition, where he and his crew supposedly wore Eterna watches, who made the tribute watch years later to commemorate the expedition.

Heyerdahl is an excellent story-teller. He writes with a sense of wonder, almost child-like. The culminating event is when the raft named the "Kontiki" is approaching one of the islands in the Polynesian chain, but their approach becomes life-threatening due to the treacherous reefs around the island.

He writes as an ethnographer and anthropologist with great respect for the people who are the subject of his writing.

By building and navigating a raft built to the specifications of South American Indians he argued made the trip thousands of years earlier, he proved that they may have been able to navigate that distance and populate the islands.

While his theory was not necessarily proven, he did prove that the trip could have been made. All six of the crew returned safely.

This isn't entirely his fault; the script didn't help, choosing to focus on a made-up bit of drama was Heyerdahl right in theorizing that the current and trade winds would carry the Kon-Tiki to the South Pacific, or was the raft destined just to drift out to sea?

The film would have done better just to focus on the sheer adventure of the Kon-Tiki's voyage; there is enough of that to fill two reels, if they're shot well.

And that was the other problem: much of this film looked as if it was shot in a bathtub. I'd recommend the actual black-and-white footage of the real Kon-Tiki epic over this reproduction.

You get to see Heyerdahl and his crew in action, and even the lack of color doesn't take away from the wonders they encounter as they drift from South America to the South Pacific under the billowing sail with ancestor-god Kon-Tiki's red-bearded face painted on it.

Absolutely stunning in every way. I watched this with my 13 year old son, he then wanted a globe. Now he's fascinated with ocean currents, the Polynesian islands, bought the book The Ra Expeditions, Hawaii, is fascinated by ancient history and genetics.

This movie sparked something that is magical I first heard about Heyerdahl back in high school and in college I read some of his intriguing books.

But I really didn't know what to expect when I bought this film. This is a great adventure story told with intelligence.

The ensemble cast is excellent. Production values are top notch front to back. Beautifully photographed with a fine score. The visual effects are seamless and they all enhance the story.

I watch Kon Tiki usually once a year. Thank you Thor Heyerdahl. It is a classic adventure saga. A true leap into the unknown, testing a hunch as to how pre-historic man got from Point A to Point B.

More than half a century later, it remains a fascinating story. Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian, in , with the Second World War barely in the rear view mirror, wanted to test his theory that Polynesian might have been settled by people from South America rather than Asia.

He understood that the ocean current flowed steadily west and the wind also steadily blew in a westerly direction from the South American coast along Peru.

He flew there, made some senior level contacts that were interested in the idea, and thus got assigned labor help.

They felled balsa trees in the mountains, floated them to the coast, and with the help of sailors in the naval yard, built one very large raft, without any nails; ropes held the logs together.

The movie of the expedition was released in ; it won the Oscar for Best Documentary in There was a crew of six humans, and one much beloved parrot, that alas, did not make it the entire way.

Sharks accompanied them almost the entire way, making getting in the water to make repairs problematic. On a couple of occasions they attracted the attention of whales that would come close to the raft, then dive under it and surface on the other side.

The whales were a big concern since they had the power to sink the raft. Another big problem was the possibility of being left behind by the raft, either when someone was in the small dinghy or swimming, since the raft could not turn around and go back.

Both scenarios almost happened. The documentary is narrated in a matter-of-fact Scandinavian style. I found the planning and the logistics, some of which was indicated above, fascinating.

They would travel one-fifth of the way around the world in days and not see a single boat the entire time. They attributed their propulsion to the ocean current for one-third of their speed and the wind for the other two thirds.

The record distance covered was km in one hour period. On day 91 they spotted a land bird and knew they were near an island but the first two they had to sail by, unable to steer to them.

As they said, they could go one-fifth of the way around the world WITH the current and wind, but it was virtually impossible to go yards against the current and wind.
