I think this was very much as he was: a fighter not prone to hiding his ambitions who was loyal to his army but not averse to atrocities when it benefitted him. The battles were thrilling and felt like the face of war that Roman and Greek soldiers would have experienced. This was a really great story, and as pointed out by other reviewers, a fairly untouched period of history where it comes to representation in fiction. There is also a lot of blood and gore. This is the final struggle between Henkersmahlzeit two great powers of Tuva Novotny Europe - Greece and Rome - and it is bloody, with disasters and very few triumphs on both sides.

It should be said that The Asylum manages to spew out the occasional great movie once in a blue moon, "Clash of the Empires" or "Age of the Hobbits" was not one such star moment.

Far from it. What really worked for the movie was the spectacular landscapes and wilderness surroundings in which the movie was shot.

Or perhaps it just needed something a little extra to bring me fully onboard. I had hoped for a full on culture clash as the treacherous Greeks faced the Roman barbarians as each side saw it.

I found the narrow focus on warfare a bit limiting. Is that all kings do? Or Roman senators for that matter? Yet that military aspect worked very well indeed.

The battles were thrilling and felt like the face of war that Roman and Greek soldiers would have experienced. Fans of military fiction will undoubtedly embrace it more eagerly than me.

A pretty good action packed novel based on the greek and romans at war. The action scenes were alot of fun, and quite graphic.

I think the overall plotting was a little too character driven. There were alot of characters to follow and it jumped from one scene to the next too quickly for my liking.

This, I think, is one of his best. As always, the story is told from all angles. From Flamininus in Rome, trying to bribe his way to make himself consul of Rome.

He is hungry for power, yearns to be the man that finally gets to destroy Phillip of Macedon. Phillip himself is well portrayed, a ruthless leader that will stop at nothing to protect his country.

My favourite characters though, I love Ben's books, and have devoured them all since I first discovered The Forgotten Legion many years ago.

My favourite characters though, are the soldiers in the blood and dust. Roman legionaries Felix and Antoninus were dismissed from the army after the battle of Zama, but have decided to risk enrolling for the new campaign.

It's not Macedon they fear, but Matho, their old centurion. Demetrios is a lowly oarsman on a Macedon trading ship. He longs to fight in the phalanx, and finally gets the chance to fulfil his dream.

His story is a real 'coming of age', as you watch the boy grow into a young man. He was by far my favourite. Overall, I found this book brilliantly written and captivating, from the high politics of the Curia in Rome to Phillip's inner circle in Pella, to the bone crunching, blood drenched battle fields, I was engrossed.

Then I discovered Ben Kane and was pleasantly surprised…. Ben Kane follows his usual formula. We have two main characters, front line troops and each on opposing sides; Felix the Roman and Demetrios the Greek.

Above them, we have a character from each of the opposing elites, the Roman consul Flamininus, and King Philip V of Macedon.

Ben Kane is a master at weaving four plotlines together to create a coherent whole. The result is that you get a clear view of the strategy and politicking played out by the ruling classes, then you see how that impacts on the humble soldiers and civilians who are trying to survive the violence unleashed by their masters.

For those readers who might be getting a bit bored of Roman soldiering, this book has some refreshing additions, such as an insight into Greek hoplite tactics and how they match up to the Roman meatgrinder.

I do have some whinges I need to get off my chest now: Given that Ben Kane is generally so meticulous in his research and is a master of historical detail, I was disappointed to find some bloopers in this novel.

On page we have consuls elected by the Senate. In fact, he says as much in the glossary. There are plenty of accounts of dramatic elections involving bribery, assassination threats and class struggle one of the two consuls had to be a pleb, although the voting system was weighted in favour of the toffs.

We get a rather brief account of one candidate trying to win the election by bribing his fellow senators a serious criminal offence known as ambitio, which was punishable by exile for life.

We have another blooper on page when a Greek soldier places the Battle of Marathon a century late around BCE instead of Then on page we have Roman legionaries writing letters home.

Would Roman legionaries and their parents be literate? And who delivered the letters? These are minor issues compared to the positives.

Ben Kane is the kind of author that makes that line very, very thin. It is told from the perspective of four characters, two Roman and two Greek.

Through these characters, you feel every moment of the brewing conflict, and then the war itself, and he pulls no punches.

You get all of the blood and guts, joy and despair, rage and sorrow, and he makes you feel every bit of it. Now I will warn you that this is not a bullet ride, but more of a grab you by the throat and drag you along for the ride.

No word is wasted just for the sake of being there. You need every word, because the make you feel what is going on.

There were times I looked at my feet to make sure I was not standing in the blood of the battlefield. One night, while reading this book, a train went by and shook the house.

I was ducking for cover thinking it was fire from a catapult. Yes, it is that good.

There's no doubt about it - when it comes to Roman military history, Ben Kane is the undisputed master and this is another in a line of meticulously researched novels set during the days of the Roman Empire.

Usually, we find the Roman armies battling barbarians somewhere,but this time around, the enemy is much more civilized.

On one hand, you have Philip of Macedonia trying to recapture lands in Greece he feels are rightly his, while on the other you have less than likeable Roman military command There's no doubt about it - when it comes to Roman military history, Ben Kane is the undisputed master and this is another in a line of meticulously researched novels set during the days of the Roman Empire.

So, they aren't up against barbarians, you have two of the more advanced societies of the time both trying to win what is probably the single most advanced one of the time, Greece.

As a result, the reader is left wondering,is there anyone in this story I can really like? Usually, the Romans come across as more sympathetic, but this time around it was Philip and his armies which came off more as the "good guys.

Perhaps this was due to the fact that the Roman armies had some commanders who were, for lack of a better word, jerks and opportunistic fools such as the last one, Flamininus who is one of the least likeable characters to appear in a book of Kane's.

I kept hoping he would go down,but sadly, at the end of the book, he's still standing, more than likely so he can bedevil Philip and his men in the second volume of the story.

Cheering against Rome? Hoping the Romans would lose and go home? Highly readable, it's slow going initially as the stage is set and the principal characters are introduced, but the pace inevitably picks up through rousing battle scenes and the death of at least one character a Roman that if he were alive today, I wouldn't hesitate to run down if I were in my car and saw him crossing the street!

And, as might be expected, there's the climatic battle which sets the stage for next year's installment. Since Kane is a UK-based writer, his books are best obtained from a UK vendor because they aren't readily available in the US since no US publisher is willing to publish his efforts.

Apparently, American readers are more interested in the latest book about the Kardashians than they are in getting lost in a rousing tale of ancient Rome.

That's a sad commentary about the tastes of the American reading public. Now, if we didn't have to wait a full year for the next installment May 22, Helen rated it liked it Shelves: giveaway-won.

I won an advanced uncorrected proof copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. As I read the uncorrected proof I cannot quote from the book directly or comment on the typos that I found but due to a mix up my book only arrived a fortnight before the actual release date and because of other commitments I could not finish it in time to pass on my comments prior to publication on the 17th May I liked that not only did it cover viewpoints from both sides of the clashing empires, but also looke I won an advanced uncorrected proof copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

The battle scenes are good and certainly action-packed. There is also a lot of blood and gore. The text jumps between these various viewpoints a lot and at times I did lose track of whose storyline I was in - it is more like several separate stories all weaving in and out of one another.

It is very character heavy which did mean we lost a sense of some of the individuals but the main few characters are all quite well developed.

There are also virtually no female characters - the only notable female in the book is the young girl who gets saved from being gang raped by some of the soldiers.

One of the main characters, Flammininus is even married, but we don't learn this until pg. I think it would have been good to have some accompanying maps to help me picture some of the locations a bit better but these may simply not have been in the proof and will have been included in the final published edition.

One thing I do feel I have to flag up was the frequent use of bad language, because it may well upset some more sensitive readers, especially given that some of it was quite strong.

The "C" word is used 4 times and the "f" word gets used on 41 occasions. I think this was one reason I didn't give the book a higher rating.

The book does also have lots of implied sexual references that some readers might find a bit shocking. I like the dramatic battle at the end and that it held our sympathies with the characters on both sides of the conflict right to the very end.

However, I also felt that it did finish slightly anti-climactically because there was no definitive ending to the battle or the characters, but I think it was obviously set up to leave it to lead on directly to the following books in the series.
