Instead, Felix, who realizes that he is still too attached to his wife, refuses to go, opting to "scrub the pots and wash his hair" instead.

Oscar joins the sisters in their apartment, but winds up spending the night drinking tea and telling them all about Felix.

Furious about Felix's ruining the date, Oscar resorts to giving Felix the silent treatment and torturing him by messing up the apartment as much as possible.

Felix retaliates by just being himself, driving Oscar insane with his endless cleaning and neurotic behavior.

Eventually, the tension explodes into an argument that results in Oscar demanding that Felix move out.

Felix complies, but leaves Oscar with a major-league guilt trip for having abandoned his still-in-need friend. Feeling awful about throwing Felix out, and not knowing where he has gone, Oscar assembles his poker buddies to search New York City for Felix in Murray's NYPD police car, which he's not supposed to use for this purpose.

After searching for hours, they return to Oscar's apartment to find out that Felix has moved in with the Pigeon sisters. Oscar and Felix apologize to each other, and realize that a bit of each has rubbed off on the other, with each being a better person for it.

Felix agrees that next Friday night, he will be at Oscar's apartment for their poker game. The once slobbish Oscar tells his friends to clean up their mess after the poker game is over, ending the film.

For the film version, Matthau reprised his role as Oscar, and Felix was portrayed by Jack Lemmon, who had never played the character before.

Most of the script from the play has been retained, although the setting is expanded: instead of taking place entirely in Oscar's apartment, Simon also added some scenes that take place at various outdoor New York City locations such as the scene at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York.

The film made its debut at Radio City Music Hall in Roberto Clemente was asked to hit into the triple play that Oscar misses, but he refused to do it and Bill Mazeroski took his place.

One of the outdoor scenes in the film involved Felix shopping at Bohack , a Maspeth, Queens -based supermarket chain ubiquitous in the New York City area during the midth century.

The last Bohack supermarket closed in The award-winning jazz instrumental theme was composed by Neal Hefti. The theme was used throughout the movie's sequel , starring Lemmon and Matthau and released 30 years later, and also adapted for the TV series and used over the opening credits.

The song also has seldom-heard lyrics, written by Sammy Cahn. The Odd Couple garnered both critical acclaim and box-office success; it opened at New York's Radio City Music Hall on May 2, and ran there for a record-breaking 14 weeks.

Roger Ebert gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four and praised the "universally good" performances, though he noted times when "the movie's Broadway origins are painfully evident, as when the players in the poker game are grouped around three sides of the table, but the 'downstage' side is always left bare.

Lemmon sometimes overacts. Murphy of Variety called it an "excellent film," adding, "Teaming of Lemmon and Matthau has provided each with an outstanding comedy partner.

The film is recognized by American Film Institute in these lists:. The film spawned a television series spinoff in , also entitled The Odd Couple which ran until Produced by Depatie-Freleng , it features a sloppy dog and a neat cat.

A sequel , The Odd Couple II , reunited Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in their original roles and was released 30 years later, breaking the record for the length of time between an original movie and a sequel featuring the same cast.

He's certainly been wonderful in plenty of lighthearted roles, but I guess I always put his success down to his characters' grumpiness and ruthlessness, a gruff contrast to the flamboyant personality of his frequent co-star Jack Lemmon, and, I suppose, a natural extension of his earlier work in dramatic pictures.

Watching Gene Saks' 'The Odd Couple ,' adapted from a popular Neil Simon play, the realisation suddenly clicked: Matthau is, in his own right, absolutely hilarious!

Initially striking the audience as filthy, crude and generally unappealing, his Oscar Madison eventually manages to worm his way into our hearts, culminating in a hilariously overplayed confession of emotions that Matthau rasps out in a voice not entirely his own.

At the same time, while holding his own as a comedian, his interplay with Lemmon is, of course, pitch-perfect; indeed, the film rightly belongs to both actors, who have never failed to light up the cinema screen by themselves, let alone together.

Calling to mind Billy Wilder's screenplay for 'The Apartment ,' this Neil Simon comedy builds itself around around a rather morbid premise.

Compulsive house-cleaner Felix Unger Lemmon , having just been evicted by his wife of twelve years, attempts to commit suicide, but fruitlessly abandons the idea after he wrecks his back trying to open the hotel window.

Dejected, he arrives at the house of good friend Oscar Matthau , a divorced slob who lives alone on a diet of potato crisps and green sandwiches that might contain either very new cheese or very old meat!

Oscar kindly offers Felix a place to stay, but is soon overwhelmed by his friend's finicky personality and constant insistence on absolute cleanliness.

The pair form an unusual sort of marital arrangement, with Felix assuming the role of the effeminate and constantly-nagging wife, and Oscar as the sloppy, unappreciative husband who always comes home later than he's supposed to.

This is a marriage that barely lasts three weeks, and, by the end of it, we can completely sympathise with Felix's ex-wife, who remains unseen.

The pair's four poker buddies John Fiedler, Herb Edelman, David Sheiner and Larry Haines are also constantly badgering each other about some obscure annoyance, but you can't deny that they've got the best of intentions.

Their decision to treat Felix as though nothing has happened to him may have sounded fine in theory, but maybe being ignored wasn't quite the correct solution to Felix's gloomy feelings of inadequacy and inconsequentiality.

Williams dissuades her. Neil Simon the author of the play which the series is based upon makes an uncredited appearance in the fifth-season episode ""Two on the Aisle".

During its original run the show had mediocre ratings at best the show was never among the Top 30 programs on the Nielsen ratings list during its entire run.

Nonetheless, both actors were nominated for Emmy Awards in each year of the show's run. Jack Klugman won two Emmy Awards for his work in and , and Tony Randall won an Emmy as well in ; upon accepting the award, he commented on the fact that he wished he "had a job", for the show had recently been cancelled.

Klugman was nominated for a Golden Globe in and won one in The show itself was also nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in the years , and To date, these are the last Emmy nominations to a sitcom airing on a Friday night.

For the first three seasons, the program's opening credit sequence consisted of Felix and Oscar in various humorous situations around New York City such as Felix trying to help an old lady cross the street to no avail, Oscar getting his feet on wet cement for ogling a girl with a revealing dress, and both cavorting around a Maypole.

Halfway through the show's debut season, a "prologue" was added to the intro, featuring a narration featuring voice actor Bill Woodson retelling how Felix and Oscar came to live together:.

Unger's unseen wife slams door, only to reopen it and angrily hand Felix his saucepan That request came from his wife.

Deep down, he knew she was right, but he also knew that someday, he would return to her. With nowhere else to go, he appeared at the home of his childhood friend, Oscar Madison.

Sometime earlier, Madison's wife had thrown him out, requesting that he never return. Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?

This opening narration was apparently added because ABC, fearing the audience would speculate about an homosexual subtext given changing perceptions of masculinity at the time, insisted that the characters' condition of divorced men had to be mentioned every week.

For some reason, it was mentioned Oscar had been thrown out of his home like Felix, when for all intents and purposes, Oscar had lived on the show's apartment before and during his marriage to Blanche as shown in several episodes.

More inconsistent was the "childhood friend" part which would be removed from the narration from the second season and changed to simply "friend"; the "some time earlier" part was also changed to "several years earlier" at the same time , as there were conflicting versions about how they met: the show's fourth episode [ "The Jury Story" on IMDb ] shows Felix and Oscar meeting during jury duty seven years earlier.

And, in a episode [ "That Is the Army Mrs. In later seasons, the opening sequence featured highlights from past episodes mixed with the previous footage as well as another clip recreated from a scene on the show where Felix reprimands Oscar for drying his hands on the curtains, only to have his shirt used as a towel as well.

Towards the end of the introduction title sequence for the series' entire run , the duo can be seen sitting on a park bench at W58th and 5th Ave in front of the Grand Army Plaza Monuments, Pulitzer Fountain, where Oscar throws his lunch wrapper on the ground and Felix beckons him to pick it up.

The closing credit sequences for the first two years of the show consisted of more of the duo's zany antics like Felix talking to a man repairing a street clock and Oscar indiscreetly looking at a peep show , while on the third and fourth seasons the credits were overimposed on a scene where Oscar throws his cigar on a big fountain in New York City's Columbus Circle, Felix barks at him to pick it up, and Oscar scoops it up with his shoe and then places the wet and soiled cigar butt in Felix's pocket.

For the final season, the credits were shown against a blue background. Over the years, Klugman and Randall appeared in many television commercials and public service announcements for several different products as Felix and Oscar, including ads for Yoplait yogurt Klugman later appeared in commercials without Randall for the product in the early s ; in , for the game Challenge Yahtzee ; for a while, their likenesses also appeared on the game's packaging, with the slogan "You play your way—I'll play mine!

Klugman and Randall also reprised their roles as Felix and Oscar in several regional productions of the original Neil Simon play. They toured in the play during the TV version's summertime off-season in the early to mids; they later appeared in several performances of the play during the late s and early s.

Minolta countered by hiring Randall, then on the NBC sitcom Love, Sidney , to do a commercial for that company's copiers where he channeled his Felix role, mentioning that he "can change copy colors without getting that disgusting black powder all over my hands!

Of course, I'm not a slob, either, like, uh Klugman had lost a vocal cord to throat cancer and this real-life struggle was written into the script.

In the film, Felix tries to help Oscar recover following surgery; he also becomes overly involved in his daughter Edna's upcoming wedding, much to her and Gloria's Barbara Barrie dismay.

Although authorized by Neil Simon who received a "based on" credit completely different characters were created: "Spiffy" a fussy cat voiced by Frank Nelson and "Fleabag" a sloppy dog voiced by Paul Winchell who live together in a house that is half rundown and messy and half pristine and tidy along with a matching car.

The characters' professions in this version were reversed from the original series, with the fastidious Spiffy working as a reporter and the rumpled Fleabag a photographer, often working together.

The cartoon was canceled in It was called The New Odd Couple , and initially used eight previously-filmed scripts from the original series; when the strike ended during the series' production, union writers returned, and original episodes were written from then on.

It was canceled after only half a season. This version takes several of its cues from Two and a Half Men , a Chuck Lorre -created sitcom with a similar premise to The Odd Couple even alluded to the similarities beteween the two in the episode "Whipped Unto The Third Generation".

Some of the details taken from Two and a Half Men include Felix and Oscar being siblings instead of friends, as well as Felix being a doctor and Oscar a musician.

This version, a multi-camera sitcom, was co-created and co-produced by Matthew Perry , who played Oscar, while Thomas Lennon played Felix. Some episodes, mainly from the first season, were available on a VHS videotape set during the s, and distributed by Columbia House.

Season 1 was released in Region 2 on April 28, A notable example of this can be seen in the Season 5 episode "Strike Up the Band or Else" where, in the epilogue, guest star Pernell Roberts' character is going to sing, and the episode abruptly ends and closing credits roll.
